Sustainability – A new subject that UTS pioneers in teaching in the Oxford International Curriculum

Sustainability is the newest addition to the Oxford International Curriculum (OIC) implemented by Oxford University Press (OUP). UTS is proud to be one of the first schools to pilot the Sustainability subject in Ho Chi Minh City. New aspects of the subject framework and transmitted knowledge will be addressed in this article.

 

Learn about a sustainable future through this new subject

With Sustainability, students access to the core content, skills, and mindset needed to participate in creating a sustainable future for themselves and society. This subject focuses on three domains: 

  • Living on planet Earth: Examining the overall relationship between humans and the planet. 
  • Taking responsibility for the difference we make: Understanding and taking responsibility for our impact on life. 
  • Making change: Initiating changes, starting from small actions to promote sustainable development. 

 

 

UTS pioneers in teaching Sustainability within the educational framework

In the initial first stages of integrating the new subject into the educational framework, UTS students at the primary school level have chance to experience the Sustainability class. Alongside acquiring new knowledge, students also learn how to apply it in practice by engaging with their surroundings to solve problems given by teachers.

They were enthusiastic and enjoyed the lesson, reflecting the philosophy that OIC always emphasizes: “The joy of learning”.

In the foreseeable future, by officially implementing the subject as a part of the school’s educational framework, UTS aims to equip students with a solid foundation to become global citizens in the 21st century.

CIS accreditation serves as evidence of the internationally benchmarked educational quality at UTS. The Council of International Schools (CIS) is an international organization dedicated to evaluating and accrediting schools worldwide, with a network of more than 1,300 schools across over 120 countries. It can be understood as a “global benchmark” that helps parents and students identify trustworthy educational environments. To receive CIS accreditation, a school must meet high standards in educational quality and undergo a multi-year evaluation process with rigorous reviews. Every essential aspect — from curriculum and teaching quality to student experience, school culture, and operational systems — is carefully assessed. The goal is to ensure that all elements of the school operate cohesively and meet international standards, creating a reliable, consistent, and student-centered learning environment. UTS House Debate Championship – The arena of argumentation & multidimensional thinking of Primary UTS-ers

Last Friday morning, April 10, 2026, the Primary School House Debate at UTS took place in an exciting and dynamic atmosphere. More than just an academic competition, it was a learning playground where young UTS-ers could grow, learn, and respect one another. Throughout the event, students developed essential skills in listening, critical thinking, and confidently expressing their viewpoints, while fostering a spirit of open-minded and respectful dialogue. At UTS, each House is not only a team but also a representation of a core value that every UTSer strives toward. Each House carries its own unique identity, contributing to a diverse yet united student community. These values were clearly reflected in every debate round, as students actively listened, responded thoughtfully, and respected differing perspectives. This year, teams engaged in timely, future-oriented topics that required deep thinking and multi-dimensional perspectives: In the English debate round, students explored the topic: “It’s better to reduce plastic use than to ban it completely” — presenting diverse viewpoints that balanced practicality and long-term impact in protecting a greener future. In the Vietnamese debate round, students discussed: “Winning is more important than enjoyment” — a seemingly simple question that sparked meaningful reflections on the value of effort and the true meaning of perseverance.
